over Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KOs) on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Floyd outboxed Canelo from the opening bell. Canelo continued to move forward throught the contest but had little effect. In the end, the judges scored it 116-112, 117-111, and an unbelievable 114-114 from C.J. Ross.
In the co-feature, WBC/WBA super lightweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KOs) retained his titles with a twelve-round unanimous decision over WBC interim super lightweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32 KOs). Garcia was in control during the early rounds as he was the much busier fighter and the more accurate puncher. Matthysse’s right eye was nearly shut by round eight and Garcia, a 2:1 underdog, continued to have his way with the challenger. Matthysse was more aggressive in the later rounds, but he was dropped in the eleventh round. Garcia was also deducted a point for a low blow in the twelfth round. In the end, the scores were 115-111 and 114-112 twice. With his impressive victory, Garcia is now a possible opponent for Mayweather's next fight.
Also, Carlos Molina (22-5-2, 6 KOs) won a twelve-round split decision over IBF junior middleweight champion Ishe Smith (25-6, 11 KOs). Scores were 116-112 Smith, and 117-111, 116-112 for Molina.
Plus, welterweight Pablo Cesar Cano (27-3-1, 20 KOs) earned a ten-round split decision over Ashley Theophane (34-5-1, 10 KOs). The scores were 98-92, 97-93 for Cano while Theophane was up 96-94 on the third card.
